“For Andra, the houses in this book serve not as mere containers and backdrops for life, but rather dwellings as expressions of values drawn from the most intimate planes of existence and from personal attachments.”

Foreword by Lyndon Neri, co-founder Neri&Hu Design and Research Office

Tropicality: Houses by Andra Matin brings together sixteen tropical houses designed by andramatin over the last two decades. Showing exquisite craftsmanship and lush tropicality, each house provides living environments that exist effortlessly in harmony with their surroundings.

Tropicality in architecture is not merely a response to climate or topography, but also takes into consideration the identity of a place. Andra Matin presents tropicality as a design approach that is extracted from various building practices in the Indonesian archipelago. Nature, climate, geography and topography are fundamental constraints that at the same time, provide invaluable opportunities for place-making. From a house elevated on stilts that's completely open to the outdoors, to one topped with a giant, overhanging concrete roof, to a hexagonal weekend villa hidden amongst the trees, these are homes that will delight and inspire anyone with an interest in beautiful spaces.

Tropicality: Houses by Andra Matin

Working in a tropical climate in a huge country where the architecture scene is often overlooked, Matin has come to redefine indoor-outdoor living. His work is widely admired across the region, but many of his projects have rarely been seen. Matin's novel approach, revealed here in his first English-language monograph, has much to teach – especially as it continues to gain momentum and relevance in a warming world.

This book is a part of the Wonders of Weaving campaign called WOWRead which aims to increase the prevalence of Asian Architecture Literacy.
