The broken lines of Lapa’s central separation panel draw the attention, creating a ‘micro- architecture’ in which the panels’ alternating slopes instil a kind of dy- namic imbalance, without the slightest hint of unease. Rather, it finds its own rhythm, its own balance, giving an impression of perfectly- mastered accomplishment: the bookcase, essentially an inanimate object, appears to come to life. Lapa’s sculptural appearance is emphasised by the plain, satin-finish treatment of the black-stained oak veneer & elephant-lacquered back panel, or the natural oak finish & mastic lacquered back panel.
