Description
Sokasi Bamboo Cooking Class/School (Agung Budi Raharsa as part of Ibuku Team). In a collaboration between Ibuku Team with Four Seasons Resort - Sayan Ubud Bali, we recently completed the Sokasi Cooking School in 2018 on the bank of the Ayung River in Four Seasons Resort - Bali. Bamboo is such a natural fit for a Balinese cooking school as Balinese people have a long tradition of using bamboo utensils and bamboo (sate sticks, rice steamers, in the ovens) in the cooking process. As described by our team member (PIC), for the Sokasi we put the spotlight onto ‘Bambu Tali’ (Gigantochloa Apus) as the structural material because this species of bamboo is constantly used in daily life and crucial to every Balinese ceremony or event—used for shade structures, as a rope material, to create satay sticks and rice baskets. That would describe this building as the harmony of two elements: sustainable architecture and Balinese culinary wisdom. I said The Sokasi roof form resembles a dry leaf that has begun to curl, providing a space for us under its cover. The structure of the building reminds us of the elegant bones of a leaf. Unlock another layer of Bali’s rich culture and forge a deep connection to the land by taking part in a hands-on class at Sokasi, our new riverside cooking school. Set within fragrant herb and vegetable gardens, our outdoor classes offer an opportunity to learn about food that pleases the palate and lifts the spirit. The Chef said, name Sokasi is derived from Sok Nasi (literally ‘rice basket’), which is made from woven bamboo and usually hand-painted. The Balinese use Sokasi to serve cooked rice and to carry fruits, flowers, leaves, and food to the temple to make offerings.
