Description
The concept of the building is the “Stackhouse” where each floor represents a block with uniquely different functions of the building. The brief required a building program that would be filled with entertainment and restaurant tenants. Entertainment could include tenants such as nightclub/bar, family karaoke, art gallery/co-working space, holistic and spa, boxing and martial arts gym and specialty restaurants. These functions are expressed through the exterior façade where each level is treated with a unique material which is both playful and eye-catching. Bandung is considered one of the most important creative centers in Indonesia. Most fashion houses go to Bandung for textiles and manufacturing, while some of Indonesia top architects and designers come out of Bandung, as well as artists such as Sunaryo who have put Indonesia on the international art market. The Façade of the “Stackhouse” represents this dynamic and cultural influence that Bandung is for Indonesia. The building could potentially also be an “Art center” and gathering space for tenants related to the creative and design industry. The plan of the Stackhouse was a challenge due to the narrow width of the site and the 7 metre setback from the street front leaving very little space left of open space. Essentially the building is a giant ruko (shop house). To avoid the Ruko typology, the design of the building at each level, or building block function, is pushed and pulled to create void spaces in the lobby areas, front terraces and balconies.
