Prasetyo Galileo Breezeway is located at Jalan Batu Tulis Raya Jakarta, one of densely business areas in Jakarta. This can be seen from the tightly spaced buildings surrounding the site. Their exterior walls are even permitted to attach to each other. This 5 story office building is built on top of 775 sqm site area with 1450 sqm building area. The land itself is situated in between two streets. Construction started in May 2012 and completed in October 2013. For the info, average temperature of jakarta is between 25-35 C and average humidity of Jakarta is between 55 – 87 % RH. Built facing north, the building façade was going to be free of direct sun ray at all times. The design challenge was on how to maximize the natural light inside the building. The wind breezes from north to south direction. This offered a new perspective for the office design to utilize wind movement. One of the objectives of the design was to have an energy efficient building. As such we try to optimize the natural illumination and ventilation elements. We purposely spaced the building with the neighboring structure at east side to allow optimum sun ray into the working area. Designed to minimize the heat from afternoon sun rays, the west side of the building is attach to the building next to it. This side is designated as service and circulation area. Furthermore, this building is also designed to take advantage of the wind movement from north to south. At the building façade, we designed a wind penetrable screen to drive good cross ventilation inside the building. It produces very good flow, such that the circulation and service areas are very comfortable even without the use of artificial cooling system. Not only that, the cross ventilation also maintains humidity around 60% RH, which is well within comfortable range of naturally cooled room, around 35- 65 % RH. The area of the building without AC amounts to one third (1/3) of the total area per floor. Or about 80 sqm. Hence, in this way, the Galileo Breezeway building reduces the need for AC usage which in turn reduces the total electricity consumption of the whole building. The building facade uses wind penetrable screen which functions as cross ventilator. It is designed so that air and lights can enter, but not rain water. The screen was also designed as the perimeter wall of the building. As such it must be made strong, safe, and long lasting. The material chosen for the screen is 2mm steel plate which can withstand the harsh weather while requiring only easy maintenance and robust. The circulation and service areas are also used as main utility track for electrical, hydrant and primary AC ducting. This centralization of trunk lines was designed tominimize any disturbances that might occur to the office area when maintenance or repair work is required. The trunk lines area is concealed by plafond on the ceiling to avoid cluttering. Whereas the office area ceiling is exposed openly. The top floor is the only area which ceiling is covered by plafond entirely. This is done to reduce the heat caused by direct sunlight to the roof top. As for building materials, we avoid excessive material usage for Galileo’s exteriors. The materials selected consisted of concrete, steel, and glasses as the dominant architectural elements. To create a “softer” atmosphere, we set up a vertical garden at the entrance stairway area. The vertical garden become a part of this building with aim to add vegetation elements. As for the interior, we use much the same materials as the exterior, but at the same time also utilize the use of wood to create the impression of warm ambience. Open office plan and exposed ceiling concepts is to create the impression of a broader, modern, and lighter office space. We utilize wood filing cabinets with steel structure as partitions to separate office area from the circulation and service areas.
