Published: 26 January 2021
Description
Indonesia is an archipelago with thousand cultures. The client has a vision to build several chapels dedicated to Holy Mary at different islands in Indonesia. He works together with local artists and asks them to make statues and mozaics of their own interpretation of Holy Mary based on local culture. Thus, there will be different 'faces' of Holy Mary, the origin of the chapel name. The first location is in the middle of landscape of Bintan Island. The brief from the client is simple; 'a humble yet iconic architecture'. Vernacular architecture and indigenous material is used so the architecture embodies the spirit of locality. The shape is a contemporary twist from the elements of traditonal house in Bintan. Balau wood is used as the main building material. The interior surface of the high pitch roof is utilized to exhibit various mozaics of Holy Mary faces and serves as the background for the entire inner space. The chapel floats on top of a reflective pond to bring calmness to the guess. It also symbolizes that we are just a small reflection in the vast universe.
