Description
Sweeping 250 metres along a bustling beachside street, the Sahid Kuta Lifestyle Resort offers a new lifestyle hub typology. The project covers 3.2 hectares and contains two zones: the ‘Beachwalk’ retail lifestyle hub, and the five-star Sheraton Hotel Kuta Bali resort. The design concept was inspired by the terraced paddy fields that dot the Balinese landscape. The name ‘Beachwalk’ is suggestive of a sensory dimension. Semi-open and naturally ventilated, Beachwalk consists of a series of terraced landscaped plates that create a ‘soft’ environment and serve as viewing decks. The looping circulation eliminates dead-end spaces. Roofs take the shape of a local farmer’s hat. Hanging vines and water channels contribute to the resort atmosphere. Locally available and environmentally friendly materials were incorporated, along with a rainwater collection and water recycling system for landscaped areas. The hotel also takes an ‘open’ design concept. The arrival sequence involves vehicular access through a small patterned lane before a double-volume lobby space delivers a spectacular and unhindered sea view. Two sets of U-shaped hotel wings gesture toward the sea, with gardens at the centre of each wing. The double-loaded hotel rooms are diagonally oriented to allow all guests to enjoy the sunset from their private balconies. The project represents the architects’ push toward environmental and social sustainability in the built environment.
