Published: 30 June 2018
Description
A collection of retail kiosks in basement 1 is the result of design collaboration of Architectural Designer (Alessandro Micelli) and Interior Designer (Melita Lumanto) under Pomeroy Studio. The refurbishment is inspired from “the wine cellar”. Each kiosk is sculpted in a semi-barrel timber wrap, and characterized by a feature ‘halo’ lighting that highlights the kiosk. The space planning strategically creates a meandering shopping experience and responds effectively to minimize level changes on the ceiling (structural constraints) as it was previously a carparking area. A custom made baffle module ceiling is designed to allow flexibility of ceiling level by rotating the module to raise the ceiling wherever there is beam or services above. A bulky column was also camouflaged to good use as storages of the kiosk for tenant to finish and services. Some of the column sides were designed as wayfindings and advertising incorporating lightboxes and directories. Nowadays, you do not need a big signages that covers visual penetrability. Lighting can do wonders, as it automatically drive people attention to it. Therefore, the interior designer of the project designed ATM housing incorporated with back-lit brushed stainless steel letters to unite the whole design ambience, and keep the various size of ATM machine look and feel organised by covering the unsightly sides of the ATM machines while withdrawing money. During the design process, a number of experiments to explore less than 1mm different floor materials and applications technique has been done as shopping malls has a high occupancy and site constraint to be solved. What might be appeared as a simple design turns out to require thoughtful plannings in order to achieve the safety and comfort of the marketplace within the budget.
